Masterclass: The representation of trauma through fiction
In this masterclass, the director will share her creative process. Soudade Kaadan works with short and feature fiction films, always in connection with Syria, while the international media pays greater attention to the documentary and war images of this country. Soudade, in her cinematography, works with the representation of trauma in variant forms, while building new depictions of Syria reconstituted in other countries, since it is not possible to film in the country.

Soudade Kaadan is a Syrian director, born in France in 1979 and based in London. She studied theater criticism in the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Syria and filmmaking at Saint Joseph University (IESAV), Lebanon. Her first feature fiction film, The Day I Lost my Shadow, was awarded the Lion of The Future for best debut at the 2018 Venice Film Festival, and the jury prize for directing at the LA Film Festival, besides being screened at several festivals, among them TIFF, BFI London, Busan and IFFR. Her short film Aziza won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize in 2019.

Masterclass: Construction of characters in documentary cinema
In this masterclass, the director will share her experience in documentary cinema. From her films Sleepless Nights, Those Who Remain (screened at the festival in 2019) and Miguel’s War (screened in this edition), Eliane Raheb will show forms of building characters when making a documentary.

Eliane Raheb is a Lebanese director who has accomplished several award-winning short films and documentaries. Her main achievements as a director include the feature documentary titles Miguel’s War, Those Who remain and Sleepless Nights. Miguel’s War premiered at the Berlinale Panorama in 2021 and won the Teddy for the best feature film, the Grand Jury award in NewFEST, the documentary award in the LGBT film festival in Paris, and the best documentary at Mizna film festival. Those who Remain (2017) has been featured in over 70 film festivals and has won 7 awards, among them l’Étoile de la Scam [Civil Society of Multimedia Authors, France]. Sleepless Nights was ranked 5th by Sight and Sound magazine in its best documentaries of 2013 list and is currently being shown in Netflix.

In this masterclass, Jumana Manna will share her trajectory in the cinema and visual arts realm, starting from her first short film Blessed Blessed Oblivion (screening at the festival) to her most recent feature film Foragers (also exhibited in this edition).

Jumana Manna is a visual artist and filmmaker. Her work explores how power is articulated, focusing on the body, land and materiality in relation to colonial legacies, and histories of place. Through sculpture, filmmaking, and occasional writing, Manna deals with the paradoxes of preservation practices, particularly within the fields of archaeology, agriculture and law. Her practice considers the tension between the modernist traditions of categorisation and conservation and the unruly potential of ruination as an integral aspect of life and its regeneration. Jumana was brought up in Jerusalem and lives in Berlin.
