Your Majesty, the “Passinho”
Children’s screams, gospel music, orishas’ chants, and brega funk beats echo through the hills and alleys of Recife’s outskirts. And it’s to the rhythm of the “passinho dos malokas” (the malokas’ dance) that young people from the outskirts are transforming the city’s art scene and making themselves known online and around the world. A song, a dance. A culture intertwined with social, economic, and gender issues.
